Quick answer: pack light in a soft-sided bag of around 15 to 20 kg, wear neutral colours such as khaki, olive and tan, and bring warm layers for early-morning game drives. Binoculars are the one item most first-timers wish they had brought.

Luggage limits

Many safari lodges are reached by small aircraft with strict weight limits and room only for soft bags. Check your itinerary, but plan for 15 to 20 kg including hand luggage.

What to wear

  • Neutral, earthy colours. Avoid bright white, which shows dust, and dark blue or black, which can attract tsetse flies in some areas.
  • Never wear camouflage. It is restricted for civilians in several African countries.
  • A warm fleece or puffer jacket, mornings in open vehicles can be cold, even in summer.
  • A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a buff for dust.
  • Comfortable closed shoes for bush walks.

Essentials checklist

  • Binoculars, ideally 8x42
  • Camera with a zoom lens and spare batteries
  • Universal adapter and power bank
  • Insect repellent and any prescribed anti-malarials
  • Sunscreen, lip balm and a small first-aid kit
  • Copies of your passport, visas and travel insurance
