Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about booking with Gallivanta, our small-group and women-only tours, and preparing for your trip.
Booking and payments
How do I book a Gallivanta tour?
Send an enquiry from the tour page or contact us. We confirm availability, send a booking form and secure your place once your deposit is paid.
How much is the deposit?
Most tours need a NZ$500 per person deposit, with the balance due about 90 days before departure. Some cruise and airline bookings have different terms, which we will always explain first.
Can I pay off my trip in instalments?
Yes. We can set up a payment plan so you pay your balance in weekly, fortnightly or monthly amounts before the final due date.
What happens if I need to cancel?
Cancellation fees depend on how close to departure you cancel and on supplier rules. Our booking terms set them out clearly, and travel insurance can cover you for many unexpected reasons.
Our tours
What is a hosted tour?
A hosted tour is one where the person who designed it travels with the group. Bridgette hosts Lotus to Lanterns herself, and some hand-picked tours are hosted by trusted colleagues, so you always have a familiar Kiwi face alongside professional local guides.
How big are the groups?
Our small-group tours are capped at 12 to 16 travellers, depending on the trip. Women-only tours are capped at 14.
I am travelling solo. Will I pay a single supplement?
On most tours we can match you with a roommate of the same gender to avoid a supplement. If you prefer your own room, a single supplement applies.
What fitness level do I need?
Each tour page shows an activity level. Most of our trips suit anyone who can comfortably walk for a couple of hours. Ask us if you are unsure.
Women-only travel
Why do you run women-only tours?
Many women love the relaxed, supportive atmosphere of travelling with other women, especially when travelling solo. Our women-only departures are designed with that in mind.
Can I bring my daughter or friend?
Absolutely. Mothers and daughters, sisters and friends often travel together on our women-only tours. Travellers need to be 18 or over.
Before you travel
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is a condition of joining any Gallivanta tour. We can help you compare options.
Do I need a visa?
It depends on your passport and destination. We will advise on visa and entry requirements when you book, but it is your responsibility to hold valid documents. Check SafeTravel for official New Zealand government advice.
Can you book my flights from Hamilton or Auckland?
Yes. We can quote international and domestic flights to connect with any tour, including add-on nights before or after.
How long must my passport be valid?
Many countries require at least six months’ validity beyond your return date and some blank pages. Check yours before you book.
